Portrait of a Noble Lady as St. John the Baptist with the Lamb
French school
Oil on canvas
Late 16th century
Canvas size 99 x 67 frame 113 x 81
This interesting painting depicts a very young St. John the Baptist who, still a child, turns with an intense gaze directly towards the viewer.
The painting displays the peculiarities of late 1500s French portraiture, to the extent that the protagonist's face takes on the form of a noble lady.
The result is a child in search of the “vain” St. John, with a hairstyle unlikely for the character's hyeratic canons.
It is precisely this intriguing peculiarity that makes the work so fascinating and pleasing, probably commissioned for a private room as a tribute to a little girl.
It is, in fact, a portrait of a noblewoman in the guise of St. John the Baptist seated beside her lamb, wearing an “ancient Greek” tunic and socks on her feet.
The painting is in a very good state of preservation, with colors still vivid and a very healthy paint layer.
