South of France school. 17th century circa 1690 / 1700
In its period frame with carved oak “à coins fleuris” motif (97 x 84 cm)
According to our research, this very attractive portrait of a young aristocrat is the work of an artist from the south of France, probably from the Comté Niçois, with an Italian influence (Piedmont?).
The young man is dressed in an ample blue and yellow velvet “robe”.
With an underlying beard bluing his cheeks, he is coiffed in the French fashion, his long “léonine” hairstyle very much in vogue under Louis XIV, from 1680 until 1715. He wears a delicate lace jabot around his neck.
The uniqueness of this portrait lies in the beauty and youthfulness of the figure (very uncommon in portraits from this period).
Good overall condition, with one (original) seam in the lower right canvas.
