Portrait of a lord in armor, workshop by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743)

Oil on canvas and original oval stretcher.
Presented in its original (17th century) carved and gilded oak frame with foliage motif.
Total dimensions with frame: 115 x 100 cm. Canvas alone: 92 x 78 cm

This large, handsome portrait of a lord in armor, portrayed in half-body facing right, is topped with an imposing “leonine” wig, very fashionable under Louis XIV.
Painted during the period when Rigaud was working for a Genoese clientele, our painting was executed by one of the master's closest collaborators, who captured this Genoese military man with real talent, without reproducing Rigaud's lessons line for line, but adopting a very personal touch.
It is all the more interesting because it uses a posture invented by Rigaud for his portrait of Nicolo Cattaneo.

Hyacinthe Rigaud, born in Perpignan on July 18, 1659 and died in Paris on December 29, 1743, was a French portrait painter. Born in the former province of Catalonia (his real name in Catalan was Jacint Rigau-Ros i Serra), he spent most of his career in Paris. Noticed by Louis XIV, whom he painted in a now-famous portrait, Hyacinthe Rigaud became highly courted by all the nobility of France and Europe, while retaining a very loyal regional and local clientele.
