(Mirecourt, 1798 – Paris, 1850)

Landscape on the farm

Oil on canvas
32.5 x 40.5 cm

A native of Lorraine, Jean-François Demay was born in the Vosges commune of Mirecourt, northwest of Épinal on May 18, 1798.
Self-taught - or a student of Jean-Louis Demarne according to the sources, he often painted the characters in the paintings of Budelot, Swebach, Pau de Saint-Martin, of a certain Bruandet and in some completed canvases of Michel. To illustrate this point, the landscape painting present at the Museum of Fine Arts in Beaune is co-signed by Budelot and Demay.
In a style close to Demarne, Demay exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1827 to 1846, pretty village scenes well composed, with a delicate and fine touch.
The artist died in Paris on October 2, 1850.

Museums: Bordeaux, Dijon, Paris (Mus. Carnavalet), Marseille, Beaune, Compiègne, Sceaux, Cherbourg…
