Born in Lyon in 1926, Armand Avril is a self-taught artist. Inspired by African art and art brut, he likes garish colors and uninhibited spontaneity.
Until the mid-1960s, Armand Avril mainly painted or drew, then he created assemblages of combinations of objects such as scrap metal, bottle caps and other abandoned objects.
This oil on paper by Arman Avril represents a coastal seaside landscape. Sheds or houses are rendered by colorful geometric shapes while the undulating lines of the mountains and the sea dominate the background of the drawing. The hues of blue, yellow, red and green are applied with energy, capturing a joyful and bright atmosphere, possibly a summer day. The style and palette used by Avril refers to the Fauvist style of Henri Manguin or Matisse.
