Portrait of a young bearded man wearing a dark green felt beret, fashionable in northern countries throughout the 17th century. His blond hair is “tousled”, and he is wearing a black coat and large scarf. His gaze seems pensive, and he turns his head slightly to the left.
In the United Provinces, Rembrandt's work influenced a large number of painters, starting with his pupils (several dozen), who themselves inspired this artistic movement for several decades. Indeed, Rembrandt encouraged his pupils to copy his works or to profit from the sale of their paintings, thus remunerating himself in exchange for their instruction and learning.
Our painting is the work of a “Rembranesque” painter, who skilfully captured the character's expression and psychology.
