An Aubusson tapestry depicting Alexander the Great at the battle of Gaugamela.
French, second half of the 17th century.
It measures 254cm wide x 236cm high.
The tapestry is in good condition with old restorations and has recently been professionally cleaned and conserved.
The battle of Gaugamela, also called the Battle of Arbela, (circa 331 BC) in which Alexander the Great (circa 356 - 323 BC) completed his conquest of Darius III's Persian Empire. It was a victory achieved against a numerically superior army on a battleground chosen by the Persians.
