Marcel Debut is considered one of the most important sculptors of bronze figures operating in France between the 19th and 20th centuries.
He left countless testimonies of his work and this splendid work is undoubtedly one of his most significant..
The bronze statue fully reflects the dictates of the Art Nouveau style, an artistic movement that was born in France and developed throughout Europe, with different names, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The common element is the reaction to academic and historical art, against which the vital force of an art that draws its inspiration directly from nature is affirmed. By studying the structural elements, he translates them into dynamic and wavy lines. Thus, curvilinear figures are born, which seem to come to life and evolve into shapes similar to plants or flowers.
The sculpture analyzed here fully highlights this taste, both in the sinuous pose of the woman who is preparing to write on the stone, and in the drapes and hair, capable of giving the image the sense of a natural verisimilitude.
The act of engraving the stone takes on an allegorical meaning of eternity, of a message engraved on an incorruptible support, which is not affected by the passage of time and therefore destined to be transmitted to future generations.
The anatomical rendering of the hands, feet, the wavy movement of the hair, the minuteness of the somatic details of the face appear very analytical.
The elegant movement that runs through the figure, devoid of any decorative exuberance, is accompanied by the natural elements represented by the stone, the flowers and the plants that surround the attractive female figure.
The work is in perfect condition, with a beautiful brown patina from which some suggestive golden parts emerge in the areas of greatest wear.
