THE ARTIST
A marine painter, pupil of Mr. Versteeg and his uncle Aert Schoùman, many of his paintings are in Amsterdam. All of his work demonstrates a remarkable knowledge of ships and aspects of the sea. Our painting is a perfect demonstration of this, and it is one of his best achievements, described as a major work with a mastery rarely encountered in a 1987 publication (The Hague exhibition, September 1987).
The production of Dutch marine that was so popular in the XVIIth century was abandoned in the XVIIIth century. Dordrecht revived this genre after 1780, the driving force behind this affair was Martinus SCHOUMAN who sometimes surpassed himself in terms of style and vision, and was followed for decades by marine painters including his pupil Johannes Christian SCHOTEL.
