OURALINE : German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth discovered uranium in 1789, and the first documented reference to uraline was in 1817.
The addition of uranium to glass was popularized by Josef Riedel starting in 1834. Uraline is a glass into which uranium has been incorporated, mostly in the form of diuranate.
The proportion of uranium generally varies from 0.1 to 2% of the total weight of the object, but some pieces dating from the 19th century contain up to 25%.
The color of uraline varies from yellow to green, it depends on the level of oxidation of the material and its concentration of uranium ions.
The two main characteristics of uraline objects are that they glow with a green fluorescent light when placed under ultraviolet light and that they can emit radiation at a level slightly higher than natural radioactivity, although most are considered harmless.
