Round Manises (Spain) earthenware dish with buff metallic lustre decoration of petals in alternating motifs on the wing around a large central medallion decorated with registers forming an alternating cross, stylised epigraphic cartouches and centred on an umbilicus in relief decorated with a fleur-de-lys.
First half of the 16th century. Diameter: 37.5 cm. Visible chips and wear. Small loss at the edge at 3 o'clock.
An example with similar decoration dating from the second quarter of the 16th century is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. Another dish in the Victoria and Albert Museum is dated between 1500 and 1525 and published in: RAY Anthony (2000), Spanish Pottery 1248-1898, V&A Publications, plate 29, no. 224.
