Essay:
We are delighted to present Landscape with Evening Star, a captivating landscape painting by the Swedish artist Gottfrid Kallstenius. This tranquil view, taken from the eastern point of Tättö, with Källvik visible in the distance, reflects the delicate glow of the evening star in a soft, calming light. The peaceful ambiance created by the shimmering light highlights Kallstenius’ mastery in rendering natural beauty.

The painting bears a strong resemblance to his well-known piece Aftonstjärnan (The Evening Star), painted in 1903 and exhibited in St. Louis. It could be considered a study for this iconic work, as it showcases similar themes and a similar aesthetic vision.

Since 1902, Kallstenius and his family spent their summers in the scenic seaside resort of Källvik, nestled in the Tjust archipelago north of Västervik. In 1904, they built a home and studio near Djupsundet, across from Tättö. Kallstenius’ deep connection to the area shines through in his landscapes, which capture the essence of the Swedish archipelago.

Landskap med aftonstjärna exemplifies Kallstenius' skill in blending light and shadow to create a contemplative and serene mood. His use of natural elements, such as the trees in the foreground and the still waters, draws viewers into the peaceful moment he has so elegantly depicted. Like many of his archipelago scenes, this painting offers a glimpse into the artist's personal relationship with Källvik and its surroundings.

Gottfrid Kallstenius (1861–1943) was a highly influential Swedish painter known for his landscapes and decorative work. After studying at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, he pursued further training in Paris and Italy. Over the course of his career, he contributed to several public commissions and authored books on oil painting techniques, leaving an enduring legacy in the Swedish art world.
