The Spinner of Procida.
Bronze statue produced during the second half of the nineteenth century, after the work of Louis Léon Cugnot, exhibited at the Salon of 1867. Known under the title: The Spinner of Procida, the inspiration for this spinner taking the features of a sensual young woman, dressed in a very elegant drapery in the spirit of antiquity, must probably follow a stay of the sculptor in the islands of southern Italy. Original green/bun patina in perfect condition of presentation, presence of the sculptor's signature. This copy bears a numbering with the stamp of the Parisian founder and publisher Antoine Basset (present at the Universal Exhibition of 1879 and 1889). Brocatelle marble base also original included in the height indicated. Louis Léon Cugnot was born in Paris, the son of a sculptor, he entered the School of Fine Arts in 1854 and won a Grand Prix de Rome (shared with Falguière) in 1859. Mainly inspired by mythology or allegories, the most famous work of this artist "Corybante stifling the cries of Jupiter" can be seen at the Musée d'Orsay, many Parisian monuments including the Hôtel de Ville, the Opera, the Hôtel de la Païva... are decorated with sculptures by Léon Cugnot.
