This rare wooden bed, measuring 220 cm, is an exceptional piece from the Highlands of Madagascar. The Merina, Betsileo, and Tanala populations are known for their ancient and elaborate sculptural tradition, and wooden beds are its most emblematic expression.
The bed, due to its size and place in the house, indicated the social status of its owner. Located in the eastern part of the home, it was the most important piece of furniture. The artisans of the time sculpted only the external side of the horizontal part visible at the level of the bed base. These refined carvings, often engraved with friezes of characters or small scenes, testify to the craftsmanship and aesthetics of these cultures.
In the 19th century, the influence of European soldiers present in Madagascar profoundly impacted the local minds. Thus, military parades became a source of inspiration for the decorations of these wooden beds, adding a unique historical and cultural dimension to each piece.
This rare 220 cm wooden bed is therefore much more than just a piece of furniture; it is a work of art that reflects the traditions, influences, and status of its time.
