"The Lion of St. Mark"
Bas-relief sculpture
Istrian white marble
19th century
Measurements: L.82 x H.60 x Thickness 9
Very good condition
A magnificent image of the "Lion of St. Mark" in white Istrian marble, masterfully carved in bas-relief.
It is the famous emblem of the "Serenissima Republic of Venice" and its power, as well as the symbolic figure of its Protector, the Evangelist Saint Mark.
These splendid marble works were mounted on the buildings of the city and throughout the territory of the Venetian dominion; many dispersed after the looting of Napoleon's troops who removed a large number of them in 1797.
It is probable that this artefact was created in the 19th century to replace an older original.
The quality of the sculpture is remarkable and stands out for its excellent description of the vigorous anatomy of the depicted Lion. His expression of strength is exceptional, with his gaze in profile and his open mouth showing his teeth. The phrase written on the open book "PAX TIBI MARCE / EVANGELISTA MEVS" stands out.
The marble slab is large and thick and, apart from a small flaw in the frame, is in excellent condition with a beautiful, very bright patina.
The live view has a truly great impact with an extraordinary decorative effect whatever its location, even in an outdoor environment.
