LELARGE Jean Baptiste II (1711-1771) received master on July 14, 1738. Son of Jean Baptiste I, he established himself on rue de Clery in the house of his father-in-law, Etienne Saint-Georges. He produced both standard chairs and remarkable models adorned with sculptures in a stripped-down style without overloading, as illustrated by the pure Louis XV-style armchairs à la Reine sculpted with flowers, which entered the Musée du Louvre with the Luzarche D'azay donation.
On his death, he was succeeded by his widow and then by his son in 1775, who quickly acquired a great reputation, and was commissioned by the Crown to use the same stamp.
It is customary to attribute Louis XV chairs to Jean Baptiste II and Louis XVI chairs to Jean Baptiste III, but it is quite possible that Jean Baptiste III made Louis XV chairs early in his career.
