Émile Louis MATHON,

Born in 1842. He studied with one of the great masters of the Barbizon School, including Charles François Daubigny.
He was affiliated with the Barbizon School.
His works can be found in many French museums.

Notre is situated on the back and dated 1872
orking to escape urban civilisation, a generation of painters found refuge in Barbizon, a small village near Fontainebleau.
The major innovation: painting in the open air, on the spot.

Emile Mathon liked to depict the life of fishermen and port towns. A keen traveller (Russia, Spain, Algeria, etc.), his most representative works are those of Brittany and Normandy.

His canvases are luminous. The artist managed to capture the tranquillity of his small communes at the turn of the century, far from the hustle and bustle of industrialisation.

In his landscapes, Mathon mainly uses elongated formats, which give a distinctive panoramic view.
