A rare Indian-export Vizagapatam ivory and rosewood inlaid folding games board. India, late 18th century, of typical form with brass hinges, made from rosewood and sandalwood, finely inlaid with ivory and heightened with black lac, the exterior with a checkered design and borders of delicate meandering floral vines, the interior with backgammon board design, the central panel with
large stylized floral motifs.

Vizagapatam was renowned for its cabinet-making industry which combined western forms with Indian ornamentation inspired by Coromandel chintzes, in particular inlaying wood with a profusion of distinctive floral designs in ivory.
