Armando Calendi’s beautiful sculpture in polychrome marble represents the muse Euterpe. In Greek mythology, Euterpe (in ancient Greek ??????? / Eutérpê, 'who knows how to please', from ?? / e?, 'good' and ????? / térpô, 'to please') was the muse who presided over music. She had invented or suggested the invention of the aulos (double flute).
She is often depicted as a young girl, wearing a floral crown and playing the flute. Music papers, oboes and other instruments are often placed next to her. With these attributes, the ancients wanted to express how charming the arts are to those who cultivate them. This sculpture shows the young girl holding a lyre, a symbol of "the whole enterprise of discovering and expressing the harmony of the cosmos".
The subject was very fashionable in the 19th century and is thus quite common.
