Virgin and Child
Spain, 16th century
Height: 82,5 cm
Visible cracks and woodworm holes
Polychromed wood
Seated and draped in a flowing mantle with soft folds, the Virgin holds the Blessing Child on her left leg. The half-relief treatment of the sculpture suggests that the piece was originally placed in a niche, most likely within a large altarpiece. Five centuries of wear and tear have not diminished the vibrant life force emanating from this work.
