This type of chest was manufactured in the 16th and 17th centuries in Nuremberg, Germany.
The coffin lid features a complex locking mechanism, often with a hidden keyhole.
The locking mechanism was covered on the inside by an engraved cover plate.
Iron chests were used to store money and important documents at home, in churches and on ships.
This chest is in its original condition, with old paint and original key.
