This box relates to so-called “virtue” objects. These were precious objects, sometimes for real domestic use, but which were more often used as gifts. They are distinguished by their refinement, which demonstrates the know-how and virtuosity of the craftsman who made them. Very fashionable from the 17th century, this fashion lasted until the middle of the 19th century.
