Hercules holding a coat of arms
North of italy, XVII century
White and black marble
67 x 30 x 19 cm
Hercules stands depicted in the nude, his right hand grasping a coat of arms while his left hand firmly holds his club. The child accompanying him boasts a high rounded forehead, full cheeks, and an upturned nose, with curls standing out prominently. His hands are adorned with slender fingers, and his legs are chubby. The terrace beneath is adorned with a black marble cartouche.
Stylistically, this cherubic figure, with his plump physique, rosy cheeks, and curly locks, evokes the cherubs created by Northern Italian artists of the 17th century.
The sculpture conveys a philosophical and moral message akin to the ideals of the Renaissance era.
Hercules symbolizes the archetype of the virtuous prince, embodying strength, balance, and moral excellence. This sculpture, likely situated within a niche either in a gallery or a noble palace courtyard, served to glorify the esteemed occupant of the residence.
