Presented on a matte black metal base
Very vigorously carved in the round and in minute detail, this sculpture of the living Christ in ivory bears the date 1858 and is located in Paris, but we have been unable to decipher the name of the sculptor.
The work of a French, Parisian imagier, this large Christ is represented with head raised to the sky, mouth half-open revealing the teeth, hair with median parting falling over the shoulders in wavy locks, vein network, slightly apparent on the arms and legs; perizonium leaving the right leg uncovered with wavy lateral fall; parallel legs with the left slightly bent and juxtaposed feet.
This important Christ exemplifies classical art with a hint of Baroque. The strength of this sculpture is due to the rigor of its anatomy, rendered through the study of musculature.
