Rare porcelain or stoneware dish from China, 17th century or earlier. The ceramic is thick and solid, and the peony design is incised and then painted in turquoise and eggplant glazes. The incised lines of the design delimit surfaces that prevent the glazes from mixing during firing. The peonies are treated simply and energetically; the artist has gone to the essentials, his drawing is powerful. This kind of decoration is unusual for this type of Chinese ceramics known as "Fahua", which are usually complicated and cluttered with details. Here, the design is minimalist. Which is what makes it so interesting.
