Jean CHEVALIER (Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu, 1913 - Lyon, 2002) - Study (1979)
At the first Salon de Réalités Nouvelles in 1947, Jean Chevalier exhibited a rhythmic abstract canvas reminiscent of the work of his friend Albert Gleizes,
or Delaunay. He was a member of the Témoignage group.
Formed in Lyon around the poet, critic and gallery owner Marcel Michaud (1898-1958), the Témoignage group brought together artists with a surrealist tendency, strongly influenced by esotericism: painters (J. Bertholle, J. Le Moal), sculptors (Etienne-Martin, F. Stahly), but also poets and musicians. Created during the Popular Front in 1936, Témoignage exhibited in Lyon, then in Paris. The exhibitions are accompanied by a review, Le Poids du Monde, a kind of manifesto that tackles various subjects such as dance, theatre, music, painting, sculpture and poetry. The group broke up in 1940.
