This little tray is exceptional. It represents the best that was done by Japanese lacquerers in the 18th century. It is the work of a great master worthy of being included in the royal collections of the time. Unfortunately it is not signed and its creator is unknown to us.
For the moment.
Many Urushi techniques are used here, embossed lacquer, flatwork, mother-of-pearl inlay, gold, silver and deep nashiji. It's spring, the old cherry tree is in bloom. Placed on the terrace there is an object that we have not been able to identify, which must have an important meaning. The details are of admirable perfection of execution, the mother-of-pearl inlays in the hollows of the tree trunk are subtle, the mosaics of several thousand small gold squares cut to form clouds and mists, are perfectly aligned creating an illusion of velvety blur. Not a single square is missing which is absolutely exceptional and confirms the excellent quality of the work.
It is miraculously in good condition.
It is a small but admirable object, worthy of inclusion in the greatest collections.
