Touching scene of love and emotion: Saint Anne and Joachim (parents of the Holy Virgin Maria) meet at the golden gate of Jerusalem after a long separation and having heard that the – until then - childless Anne will bear a child, Mary. The couple embracing is a symbolic representation of the immaculate conception of Mary. This episode is not part of the Holy Scripture but of the so-called ‘Protoevangelium of James’ from the 11th century.
Panel slightly curved but in good condition. No traces of woodworm. Some oxidation to the varnish. Signs of restoration to the face of Anne and her dress. Old French label on the back with reference to the protoevangelium ‘Le Baiser devant la Porte Dorée, Ste. Anne et St. Joachim (Immaculée Conception de la Vierge) Protévangile de Jacques’. Frame: wear and traces of woodworm. Oil on oak panel.
