Old and Alsatian furniture and paintings
Rhine Valley Cabinet - Dionysos and the Philosopher Important cabinet comprising 32 drawers, two flaps and a small theater, concealed by two gates, and a chest on the upper part. This piece of furniture also has many secrets, and the drawers are still partially covered with vintage marbled paper. The doors are clad in cushion panels, surrounded by moldings enclosing paintings of natural and tinted maple marquetry, fruit wood, ivory and pewter. In a luxuriant setting of foliage, volutes, shells, flowers, vines and grapes, two characters evolve: on the left door a scholar, standing and holding a book under his arm, an image of knowledge and knowledge, seems to present the character on the right panel; the latter, a cup in his hand, seated at a set table offering a basket of fruit and jars of wine, seems to be Dionysus God of Vines and Pleasures in the cenacle of the Greek deities, who will become Bacchus under the Roman Empire. It is necessary to notice the depth of the design of the reasons thanks to the shadows obtained in ink and the engraving of the pieces of marquetry. This beautiful 18th century cabinet is placed on a patinated raw steel console of modern manufacture. Rhine Valley - Eighteenth century - modern patinated steel console base.
