Nicolas Maes was a pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam between 1648 and 1653, who had a considerable influence on him for a long time, particularly with regard to chiaroscuro.
He returned to Dordrecht in 1653 and remained there until 1673, when he abandoned Rembrandt's style to devote himself to interior scenes. He then turned his attention
portraits, which were very much in vogue in Holland in the second half of the 17th century. He became a sought-after portraitist.
After a trip to Antwerp, he came under the influence of Antoine van Dyck.
He ended his career in Amsterdam, where he returned in 1673.
