Early 18th C Saint Barbara and Saint Catherine. Pair of statues in carved, gilt and lacquered wood.
Saint Barbara with the tower at her feet for attribute.
Saint Catherine in princess clothes and holding the book of Scripture as a symbol of her faith.
The richness of drapes as well as the beauty of faces are typical of Austrian baroque and especially of the work of Dominikus Moling (1691-1761). A pair of statues, representing Saint Barbara and Saint Gertrude carved by this sculptor at the Diocesan Museum of Bressanone, are very similar and dated 1735-1740.
In lime tree wood. Hollowed back.
