Silver-lined copper
Goldsmith Henri Kinberg's hallmark: DOUBLE / a grasshopper / the letters HK (hallmarked between 1824 and 1838)
Paris circa 1830
They stand on a cylindrical molded heel and are shouldered by two handles chased with acanthus leaves. The top part, pierced in the center, is removable and holds the wine or champagne bottle.
Very good overall condition, with some minor wear to the silver lining
Silver lining (doublé d'argent) is a technique dating from the late 18th century, which involved laminating a sheet of copper between two sheets of silver. By reducing the proportion of precious metal, silversmiths were able to produce less expensive pieces. Royal silver-lined copper platerie factories appeared in Paris around 1760. Goldsmiths Jean-Baptiste de Gournay and Alexis Micalef were obliged to mark their pieces with a proportional hallmark featuring the letters AG and the indication of the silver used beneath a crowned fleur-de-lys.
With the advent of electricity, silver lining was replaced in the mid-19th century by silver-plated metal, which made the fortunes of companies such as Christofle and Elkington.
