Pair of large Restauration-period engravings in their Empire-period palmettes frame, gilded with gold leaf, early 19th century circa 1820.
Depicts battle scenes under the Empire,
- The Wounded Trumpeter, by Horace Vernet (1789-1863). This is one of Vernet's most famous compositions. Executed in 1819 for the Duc de Berry and now part of the Wallace Collection in London, it depicts a trumpeter from the 1st Cavalry Regiment, wounded in the head and cared for by his horse and dog, both showing great concern for their master's fate.
- Le Chien du Régiment, by Horace Vernet (1789-1863). This is one of Vernet's most famous compositions. Executed in 1819 for the Duc de Berry and now in the English Royal Collection, it depicts a regimental dog wounded on the battlefield. He has been pushed aside by two soldiers, his brothers-in-arms. The drummer empties his can of water onto a piece of cloth to wash the wounds, while the other soldier holds him and strokes him to reassure him. Behind, the battle rages on.
Beautiful, finely executed performances. These are large-format, highly decorative pieces.
All in very good condition. The frames have been cleaned by our gilder. Some stains on the engravings.
