Louis Appian, born October 18, 1862 in Lyon, died December 11, 1896 in Lyon.
Son of Adolphe Appian, Louis Appian died very young, two years before his father at the age of 36. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, then at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and in Cabanel's studio.
He exhibited for the first time at the Salon de Lyon in 1886, then at the Salon de Paris in 1888. At first, he painted portraits, nudes and still lifes, but gradually began to paint landscapes, particularly after a stay in Algeria.
Here we see an embroiderer in an interior.
A painting by Louis Appian can be seen in Bertrand Tavernier's famous film, Un dimanche à la campagne (1984).
