Zacharie NOTERMAN ( 1824-1890)
was a Belgian painter and engraver born in Ghent, specializing in paintings of dogs and monkeys.
The son of a decorative painter who specialized in mural frescoes, he trained as a painter with his older brother before continuing his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Living and sharing his brother's studio, he then decided to pursue his career alone in Paris.
In the 18th century, the fashion for "singeries" was born: humorous paintings featuring dressed-up signs.
He took up this tradition with a more modern touch, in which he excelled.
At the same time, he specialized in small works depicting dogs in close-up.
Throughout his career, he took part in the major Salons of his day, and his works can be seen today at the Musée de Dunkerque, the Petit-Palais in Paris, in Canada...
