René CHRETIEN (1867-1942)
was a French painter specializing mainly in still lifes. He was a pupil of the greatest masters (Léon Bonnat, Gustave Boulanger and Elie Delaunay).
He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français at the age of just 20, winning an honorable mention two years later.
His talent earned him numerous awards, including a third medal in 1894, a second medal in 1895 and a silver medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. He exhibited in Brussels in 1910 and was again included in the Salon des Artistes Français in 1940.
René Chrétien liked to paint his still lifes against elaborate backgrounds, usually in shades of brown.
A keen observer of nature, his canvases are highly realistic, with a beautiful, lively touch.
