Offered by Franck Baptiste Paris
Important pair of trophies in lime wood finely carved and gilded with the leaf. Each element is made up of two head-to-tail spikes tied together with a strap. The middle part represents a shield crossed with a mace, an axe, a palm branch and an olive branch.
Nice condition, original gilding. The spears slightly shortened in height.
French work, probably during the revolutionary period, around 1792-1793.
Dimensions :
Height : 220 cm ; Width : 35 cm.
Provenance : Collection Alberto Bruni Tedeschi (1915-1996), in the castle of Castagneto Po (Italy, Piedmont).
Our view :
The two spades linked together symbolize the union of France and Savoy, whose coat of arms can be found in a cross on one of the shields. The mace and the axe represent Justice and Strength and are completed by the olive and palm branches, symbols of peace and victory.
This imagery refers to the revolutionary period, in particular by the shape of the irons of the pikes and by their junction which symbolizes the force by the union.
We find, for example, these elements on the beam of lictor which becomes the symbol of the First French Republic in 1792. This period coincides perfectly with the decree of November 27, 1792, which marks the meeting of Savoy and the young Republic.
It is very likely that our two trophies were framing the door of an official building of the new French entity.
