Merchant's chest, Choba Dansu, Japan, late Edo period, 19th century.
Japanese merchant chest (choba-dansu) in Keyaki. The piece has, in its lower part, three drawers closed by a locking bar and a safe closed by a door with metal reinforcements opening on three small drawers in light wood. In its upper part, the cabinet consists of a compartment with sliding doors. There is a large drawer on the upper part with locking plate. Iron handles on openwork plates.
Choba-dansu chests were used by merchants on the choba (raised platform of a store) to store daifukucho (account books) and related trading materials.
Good condition. Restored by our workshop.
