17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Rare small wedding chest called ''Cassone'' from the end of the 16th century adopting the typical shape of the Italian Renaissance.
A carved walnut decoration of great decorative richness unfolds on the four sides as well as on the lid.
The front, sides and back are arranged symmetrically with flower motifs and stylized blooming half-flowers.
The ''rectangular dome'' lid is adorned with a coat of arms probably belonging to a wealthy Italian family. This coat of arms is part of a cartouche with a ''coiled leather'' motif and is adorned with an abundant decoration of scrolls, arabesques, shells and fleur-de-lis.
This small cassone rests on four lion claw feet surmounted by an overflowing gadroon molding. It is equipped on the sides with wrought iron carrying handles.
The interior is not free from originality, since there are compartments for boxes as well as two sliding panels revealing secret hiding places.
The choice of walnut wood, the quality of the execution and the aesthetics of the decoration allow us to locate this elegant box in the region of northern Italy and to date it from the end of the 16th century.
