The figure of Christ bound and bleeding presented by Pilate to the people after the scourging was one of the strongest images of Christian art since the Renaissance, but it is certain that the maximum expression of this iconography materializes in the works of Guido Reni, the greatest and most influential of all the Italian painters of the seventeenth century. Painted in the first middle of the century, this famous depiction of his exemplifies a unique combination of grace and religious conviction that the great Bolognese genius was able to grasp in his depictions of the suffering Christ. An extremely devout man himself, in these works he avoids disfigured faces full of human suffering, leaving out the recurring prototype that focuses on Christ's external physical pain, highlighting instead his inner spiritual agonies. In this personal process, the Author departs from the traditional message of the Ecce Homo, bringing to his subject an intensity and a graceful beauty that has represented the Christian imagination of the Passion ever since. Guido Reni's "Ecce Homo" remain today the most famous and recognizable of all his paintings and the success of these images of him indicate him as one of the cornerstones of ancient painting. Our canvas, while presenting all the pictorial characteristics of the various creations that came out of his workshop, constitutes a very rare and interesting variant, slightly different in the position of the face from the more well-known ones. In consideration of the excellent quality of the painting, which is much higher than the many copies, we certainly consider it a product of his renowned workshop. In fact, the canvas stands out for its pictorial perfection and for its extreme figurative elegance, with a splendid chromatism highlighted by the excellent conditions of the work. It is an important and prestigious canvas that possesses all the requisites of the most beautiful devotional painting of the 17th century.
