A gold ring set with a chalcedony intaglio of Emperor Tiberius III Absimarus (? - 706 AD).
The intaglio is Italian and dates to the early 19th century, the ring is high carat gold and also dates to the 19th century.
The intaglio measures 2.8 x 2.2cm.
The ring is a size S 1/2 UK / 9.25 US.
The intaglio is a front facing portrait of the emperor with the surrounding inscription ’TIBERIUS.P.P.AVG.’ The image is from an engraving in a book by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri & Thomas Treterus, titled ‘Romanorum imperatorum effigies’ (Portraits of Roman Emperors) published by the Roman publisher Vincenzo Accolti in 1583.
The engraving was in turn inspired by a coin from the Emperor Tiberius III’s rein.???????
