A pair of Jacobean alabaster tomb sculptures of a noble husband and wife.
English, dating to the first two decades of the 17th century.
The male figure measures 43 x 32 x 19cm.
The female figure measures 38 x 29 x 21cm.
The noble pair of mourners, kneeling in prayer and looking towards heaven were originally situated beside a tomb. The lady can be seen wearing a highly fashionable dress, a wide ruff around her neck and Bible in her hand. The man in ceremonial armour, also with a ruff around his neck and wearing a chain of office.
Each sculpture has restorations to include:
-The lady’s nose and her Bible.
-The gentleman’s beard, hands and feet.
