Offered by Matthew Holder
A Roman ring with a nicolo intaglio featuring a bust of a bearded Bacchus as a herm.
The intaglio measures 1.4 x 1.1cm.
Ring size I 1/2 UK / 4.5 US (oval).
The intaglio is deeply carved to depict a profile of Bacchus, striking in the monochromatic appearance, the gem is set within a closed back setting. The band is a triple twisted rope form with granules and bead work upon the shoulders, typical of the 3rd to 4th Centuries AD. The patina is a deep yellow hue, demonstrating the high carat of gold, at least 18 carat.
