Marabou stork, gilded bronze sculpture by Josuë Dupon, cast by Petermann in Brussels
Pupil of Jozef Geefs and Jacob de Braeckeleer in Antwerp, Josuë Dupon became famous in 1891 with the gold medal of the Antwerp Salon for "Samson with the lion".
A regular visitor to the Antwerp Zoo, he drew his inspiration and his precise view of animal anatomy from there. The sculptor had a brilliant career, receiving numerous commissions for busts, monuments and medals. A friend of Rembrandt Bugatti, he shared with him his taste for animal representation and his regular visits to the Antwerp zoo.
