A Renaissance period silver seal for the Danish town of Karteminde.
Danish, second half of the 16th century.
The wooden handled silver seal is engraved with the matrix of a ship and the motto ‘Sigil Civitatas Carthamundensis’.
Carthamundensis is now known as the Danish town of Karteminde.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘The Garden by the Sea’, it has a modern day population of around 6,000 people, it is a small harbour town surrounded by farms in central Denmark on the island of Funen.
Measures 7 x 4cm.
