A Renaissance enamelled gold ring set with turquoises and a garnet.
Western/Central European, 16th century.
Ring size T UK / 9.5 US and weighs 7.7 grams.
This ring has a petalled bezel which was used for its evocation of flowers, a fashionable form of ring setting in the Renaissance period. The main stone is a cabochon garnet within a tapered setting, the base of the bezel is in the form of a petalled quatrefoil. Each of the petals are set with collet set turquoise bordered by champlevé black enamels which continue part way around each shoulder of the band.
The back of the ring is carved in two halves with convex lobes separated through the middle by a single ridge of gold.
