As indicated by a label on the reverse, the painting belonged to the famous publisher and art collector Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (1736-1798). An intimate friend of the great philosophers and intellectuals of his century, this 18th century Lille personality became official bookseller-publisher of the Royal Printing Office and the Royal Academy of Sciences and a key figure in the world of publishing, in a way the one of the first magnates of the press.
