The language of the daisy - Edward Portielje (1861 - 1949)

Beautiful oil painting by the Belgian painter Edward Portielje (1861 - 1949)

Size: 27 x 20 cm - Gilded frame with mouldings - Signed.

Edward Portielje was born in Antwerp in 1861 and died there in 1949. He was a Belgian painter. He was the son of painter Jan Portielje and Eulalie Lemaire and a younger brother of painter Gerard Portielje. Trained at the Antwerp Academy, drawing under P. Beaufaux, painting under N. De Keyser and Ch. Abandonné (1877-1881). He received his first painting education from his father Jan Portielje. He attended an academy full time from 1877 to 1881 in the drawing class with Polydore Beaufaux and painting with Charles Verlat and Nicaise De Keyser, following in his brother's footsteps, preferring anecdotal domestic scenes, seascapes and genre scenes related to ( Zeeland) fishing life. Very traditional, fine and precise work. Collaborated with Ed. De Jans and J. Dierckx on murals for the Antwerp World Exhibition (1894). Work in the Antwerp Museum (Plagerijtje, 1894). Mentioned in BAS I and Two Century of Signatures of Belgian Artists.
