Offered by Matthew Holder
A gold and enamel quatrefoil pendant set with a Renaissance garnet cameo of Christ.
The garnet cameo dates to the late 16th century and the enamelled gold pendant dates to the first half of the 19th century, both are Italian.
Measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 0.7cm.
The front of the pendant is decorated with objects from the passion of Christ in bright blue enamels, amongst extensively engraved floriate scrollwork. The highly decorated front is centred with a garnet cameo carved with a profile of Christ. The reverse is further engraved with floral bouquets.
A similar cameo, however set into a ring was sold by Bonhams, London, New Bond Street, Fine Jewellery, 9 Dec 2010, 14:00, Lot 8; although improperly catalogued as circa 1820 (the same date of the ring that it was set into).
