Head of Christ, France 13th-14th century

Exceptional fragment with nimbated head of Christ in yellowish limestone.
The monumental fragment most probably came from the lintel of a portal from an important church and the figure of Christ would have been seated with a blessing gesture of the right hand.
We have the license of the French ministry of culture for free circulation of this item (this document is necessary as this sculpture has been part of an architectural complex): ‘Certificat pour un Bien Culturel’. It bears the number 081115 and has been issued on 02/05/2006.
This stone is the 'Calcaire de Jaumont': typical for gothic buildings and sculptures in the region of Metz in Lorraine. Jaumont is the contraction of 'JAUne' (=yellow) and 'MONTagne' (=mountain) and is the name of the quarry of extraction.
Dimensions: 61x41x9 to 16cm
